Bertram honored as Westmont’s Scholar-Athlete Award winner

John Bertram’s surgical precision on his tennis shots might serve him well in his future. The captain of the Westmont College men’s tennis team hopes to one day to become a doctor.

Bertram was honored as Westmont’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.

The senior carries a 3.89 GPA while majoring in chemical physics. He’s received NAIA and Golden State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete accolades, has been named to the Dean’ List at Westmont and he’s been honored as a Golden Eagle award winner.

On the tennis court, Bertram finished the 2012 and 2013 seasons as the No. 3-ranked doubles player in the NAIA. He was named NAiA Honorable Mention All-American in 2013 and a doubles All-American in 2012.

In addition to his academic and athletic achievements, he has volunteered in the intensive care unit and emergency room at Cottage Hospital. He plans to attend medical school either in the U.S., Australia or Europe.

Bertram is a native of Australia. As a youngster, he served as a ball boy at the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament.
