Santa Barbara High roared back from a 16-point halftime deficit and beat Camarillo 76-60 in a non-league boys basketball game Wednesday night at JR Richards Gym.
The Dons (12-2) tepped up their defensive play, shutting down Camarillo’s flashy point guard Jacob Alonzo, holding him to just two points in the second half. He scored 14 in the first half.
“At halftime, we told the guys if we stop Camarillo’s Jacob Alonzo from penetrating, we will win this game,” Dons assistant Andy Gil said. “Jacob is a tremendous player who sees the court well and is a great scorer. We knuckled down and got rebounds and steals when we needed them.”
Santa Barbara outscored the Scorpions 47-15 in the second half.
Jack Baker scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half. He grabbed 13 rebounds and was a force on defense with six blocked shots. Isaiah Tapia knocked down five 3-pointers en route to 21 points.
Noah Burke added 11 points, but it was his defense, Gil said, that was instrumental in the second-half comeback.
“We credit the defense of Noah Burke for stepping up and stopping their best player, and Chris Wagonhurst for some huge steals in the open court during our comeback,” said Gil.
