SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Fourteenth ranked Westmont found it tough going against the top-ranked volleyball team in the NAIA, falling to Texas-Brownsville (33-0) in straight sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-11). The match took place on the second day of Pool Play in the NAIA National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.
“Texas-Brownsville is a very good team with a lot of heavy arms and a lot of height,” said Westmont head coach Patti Cook. “They definitely showed why they are the number one team in the nation. They have a lot of offensive power and we couldn’t stop them.
“We were hoping to get a little more offense going from our side, but (UTB) had a nice big block and some very powerful servers.”
Ciena Colburn, Madison Serrano and Marie Trudelle led the Warriors (22-10) offense with seven kills apiece.
“Our middles played pretty well,” said Cook of Colburn and Missy Fuerst. “Missy did a good job coving the pins and had some nice swings. Kami (Troesh) was making some nice digs. She stopped a setter dump a couple of times, made some key hitter coverages and kept us going on the defensive side of things. They outmatched us physically and we weren’t able to make up for it with scrappy play.”
The Warriors have been eliminated from advancing to the next round, but will have one more opportunity to play this season. They face Briar Cliff on Thursday.
