San Marcos was the only team to notch two wins on the opening day of the Winter Classic girls soccer tournament.
The Royals defeated Carpinteria 3-1 and beat Rio Mesa 1-0 on a Melanie Miller goal off a Libby Brymer corner kick. It was Miller’s third goal in four games this week.
Santa Barbara was blanked by Capistrano Valley, 3-0, in its opener, but bounced back and routed the San Marcos B team, 6-0.
Dos Pueblos started the tournament with a 3-0 win over Whittier Christian.
After beating Santa Barbara, Capistrano Valley could not break free against Rio Mesa and tied the Spartans 0-0.
Lucero Reyes scored off a cross form Denise Arreola for Carpinteria’s goal against San Marcos.
“I give the Royals credit,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “They came out fast and took advantage of our miscues, but I was happy with how we competed in the second half. We matched their physicality and that actually helped loosen our game up a bit.”
