With victories over Capistrano Valley and Dos Pueblos on Saturday, San Marcos’ girls soccer team triumphed in their own Winter Classic.
The Royals defeated Capistrano 1-0 in the early afternoon and came back to top Dos Pueblos 4-1 in the championship. The points-based tournament format matched up the two Channel League rivals after the two schools went undefeated in their first three matches.
Ranee Odell and Natalie Widmer scored the first goals of their high school careers in the championship match.
Odell gave San Marcos the game’s first lead in the ninth minute, followed by Melanie Miller adding to the lead by netting her fourth goal of the week on a corner kick from Libby Brymer.
Up 2-0 at halftime, the Royals maintained their edge to start the second half and scored again less than 10 minutes in. Kaitlyn Saperstein beat the keeper on a pass from Danielle Anderson.
DP cut the lead to 3-1 in the 57th minute (35-minute halves).
Saperstein then assisted on San Marcos’ final goal, finding Widmer for an insurance goal.
Saperstein scored earlier against Capo Valley to provide that match’s lone point. The Royals took the lead in the first minute and held on to beat the Cougars.
Dos Pueblos reached the championship match having routed San Marcos’ “B” team 6-0.
Capistrano Valley and Rio Mesa played for third place. The two teams met on Friday and battled to a scoreless draw. On Saturday, the Cougars edged the Spartans 2-1.
Carpinteria posted a victory in its final match, a 2-0 decision against Whittier Christian. Kelsie Bryant beat the Whittier Christian keeper from 25 yards out in the second half to build on a lead created by an own goal.
