Carpinteria held on for a 31-30 win against Cate in a game at the Bishop Diego/Carpinteria girls basketball tournament on Friday.
Cate battled back from a 12-point deficit in the second quarter and pulled to within one on a wild bank shot with 25 seconds remaining in the game.
The Rams didn’t foul until there were three seconds left. Carpinteria missed the free throw, but Cate was unable to get off a last-second shot.
Tori Kelley led Carpinteria with eight points, while Hannah Galsterer and Harmony Reed each scored six points. Reed was a beast on the boards, grabbing 23 rebounds, including 18 in the second half. Monique Sanchez had eight steals.
Erika Noble led Cate with 13 points, 11 coming in the first half. She also tallied six rebounds, three steals, and five assists. Freshman Delaney Mayfield grabbed 10 rebounds.
