Freshman Kaitlynn Miller scored a team-high 10 points, leading San Marcos to a 37-34 girls basketball win over Villanova Prep on Thursday night.
It was the first victory for the Royals, who got a solid game from Leigh Edwards. She scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
“We played with a great amount of effort and energy tonight,” said San Marcos coach Kelly Uyesaka. “Hope Morrison’s hot start from the 3-point line forced Villanova into playing a box-and-one defense and that opened up the floor for us.”
Taylor Escobar added eight points for the Royals and Maria Herrera hauled in 11 rebounds.
Villanova’s Mackenzie Boyd shot the ball well from beyond the arc, making four 3-pointers and finishing with 14 points.
“We still need to improve on the defensive end of the court, but tonight was a good step forward,” said Uyesaka.
