Bishop Diego roared back from a 16-point deficit in the third quarter but fell short at the end against Santa Clara, 45-43, in Bishop Diego/Carpinteria girls basketball tournament game on Friday.
The victory gave Santa Clara the tourney title with a 4-0 record.
Bishop (3-2) had the ball with five seconds remaining in regulation time but couldn’t get off a shot.
“We had our chances to win but we couldn’t execute,” said Bishop coach Jeff Burich.
Free-throw shooting played a key part in the game. The Cardinals made 5 off 11 from the charity stripe, while Santa Clara hit 11 of 19.
Jordyn Lilly scored 18 points to lead Bishop in scoring. Ali Everson scored eight points and Colleen Duley added seven.
Bishop completes the tournament on Saturday against Cabrillo.
