Santa Barbara High’s girls basketball team stayed close for a half against a strong Camarillo squad before falling, 58-45, in its season opener on Tuesday night.
The Dons trailed 30-29 at halftime, but Camarillo outscored them 16-8 in the third quarter to pull away for the win in its fifth game of the season.
“They beat Bishop Montgomery and Marlborough, so they’re a pretty strong team,” Santa Barbara coach Andrew Butcher said of the Scorpions.
Camarillo was led by twin sisters Geraldynn and Geralynn Leaupepe, who scored 24 and 14 points, respectively. They’ve committed to Cal Poly.
Santa Barbara got 18 points from Dezzy Coleman, all coming in the first half. Amber Melgoza added 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had six steals.
The Dons return to action on Thursday at the Lompoc Tournament.
