Tim Heiduk and Pedro Torres scored goals for Dos Pueblos, and the Chargers turned back Carpinteria, 2-1, in a non-league boys soccer match Thursday at Carpinteria.
The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on a free kick by Heiduk just outside the 18-yard box. Heiduk ripped the ball off the wall and into the net.
Dos Pueblos kept the pressure on Carpinteria, which was playing a day after beating crosstown rival Cate. The Warriors managed to keep the ball out thanks to the play of goalkeeper Jose Angeles.
Carpinteria picked up its intensity in the second half, but the Warriors got burned by an outside attack by the Chargers.
The skill of Julio Rubio helped set up the second goal. Rubio made a few defenders miss in the left corner before hitting a crossing ball to Manny Nwosu in the box. Nwosu’s header was blocked, but Torres pounced on the rebound and put it away for a 2-0 lead in the 64th minute.
Dos Pueblos coach Matt York felt his outside midfielders made a big difference in the game.
“We got great play all night from Julio Rubio and Brian Palma,” he said.
Carpinteria got one goal back on a beautiful 25-yard shot by Victor Saldana.
“We kept grinding at it until Victor took the shot after receiving a pass from Ruben Andrade,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero.
Saldana got another good look at the goal 10 minutes later but DP’s goalkeeper came up with a save.
York praised the play of Rubio and Jessie Jimenez.
Quintero said Angeles turned in stellar performance, making 10 saves to keep the Warriors in the game.
Carpinteria is 4-2 on the season while DP improves to 6-2.
