Bishop Diego’s defense took over in the second half, holding Santa Paula to just 10 points in a 54-31 boys basketball victory in the semifinals of the Fillmore Tournament.
The Cardinals (3-1) advance to Saturday night’s championship game against either Santa Ynez or Heritage Christian.
“Our defense picked up in the second half,” Bishop Diego coach Dean Prophet said. “They scored 10 points in the second half and five came from free throws.”
The Cardinals also did a good job on the boards and taking care of the ball in the second half. Prophet said they allowed just one offensive rebound and committed only two turnovers.
The Cardinals got a balanced scoring attack, with Peter Kwock and Thomas Lash sharing high-scoring honors with 10 points apiece. Will Busch added nine points.
