Bishop Diego played a smothering defense, holding Carpinteria to 11 points in the second half in posting a 64-27 victory in an opening-round game at the Fillmore basketball tournament on Thursday.
“We played really good defense and we wore them down,” Bishop coach Dean Prophet said of his team’s performance. “We didn’t give them many second chances.”
Carpinteria coach Johnny Ward said his team didn’t have its usual spark.
“We didn’t have much to show tonight. We came out flat and didn’t have much energy, he said.
Prophet put in a small, quick group of players and they made it difficult for Carpinteria to get into any kind of flow offensively.
“I think we just wore those guys down when we put that group in,” said Prophet.
Grant Sexton scored 14 points to lead Bishop Diego, while Nick Busch scored 13 points and Will Busch added 10. Nick Busch also grabbed seven rebounds and Thomas Lash had six in three quarters.
Ward lauded the play of Ian Craddock and Duncan Gordon.
