Jackie Holmer scored in the 38th minute and Brandie Harris added a late insurance goal on Thursday as SBCC blanked Mt. San Jacinto 2-0 in a Southern Cal Regional women’s soccer match at La Playa Stadium.
The 15th-seeded Vaqueros posted their third straight shutout and won for the fifth time in six games to improve to 13-5-2. They advance to a first-round match on Saturday at No. 2 Santiago Canyon (17-1-2), starting at 2 p.m.
Harris, the WSC North Player of the Year, tallied her 30th goal in the 73rd minute after a long, high lead pass from Sam Maxwell. Harris beat the goalie 1-on-1 to add to her school-record total.
Harris, who has 63 points, is the No. 1 goal-scorer in Southern Cal and No. 2 in the state.
The Vaqueros had three near-misses in the first half before Heather River set up Holmer for a left-footed score from close range.
“Once she kicked it, I knew to run forward so I wouldn’t be offside,” said Holmer, a freshman midfielder from Red Bluff, Calif. “I saw the goalie coming out and I aimed for the left corner.”
The Eagles (12-7-2) outshot the Vaqueros 8-5 in the first half but SBCC dominated the final 45 minutes with a 12-3 shot advantage, including 5-3 in shots on goal.
“We won the game but I just didn’t think we played well,” said coach John Sisterson. “We just couldn’t find out rhythm and the other team worked very hard to close us down. I don’t know if we were thinking about Saturday’s game or what but you have to take of business here first.
“We’re pleased to get this win but we can play much better than that.”
