Jasmine Mata scored 16 points and Mhiah Vickers added 12 points and nine rebounds on Saturday as SBCC downed Fullerton 73-62 to go 2-0 in its own Crossover women’s basketball tournament.
Mata hit 6-10 from the field, including 4-8 from 3-point range. The 5-9 sophomore guard from Dos Pueblos High tallied 13 points in the first half as the Vaqueros built a 41-29 lead.
“We played a lot smarter (than Friday night’s opener) and we fouled a lot less,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “We’re getting great contributions from our bench and I love our balance. Eleven out of 14 players scored tonight.”
Sheryl Scheppele hit 3-4 from long range and scored 11 points on a night when the Vaqueros converted 7-21 from the 3-point line. SBCC outshot the Hornets 41.8 to 36 percent and won the battle of the boards 50-34.
Elia Salazar had seven points and seven rebounds and Victoria Jackson collected six assists.
Cuesta (2-0) routed San Diego City 103-64 in Saturday’s first game.
