PHOTO GALLERY & RESULTS: Santa Barbara Marathon

PHOTO GALLERY INTRO:?Race winners at Saturday’s Santa Barbara International Marathon were Peter Kemboi and Elisa Karhu in the full, and Aaron Sharp and Jill Himlan in the half.

Kemboi’s winning time was 2 hours, 32 minutes and eight seconds. Karhu’s mark of 2:42.42 lowered the event record in the women’s race for the second year in a row. Karhu bested the previous record by almost six minutes.

The half-marathon’s winning times were 1:07:47 from Sharp and 1:22:15 from Himlan.

All of the running photos are taken during the “Veteran’s Mile,” the final distance to the finish line from Shoreline Park.

By the numbers, the marathon attracted 1,092 runners for the full-length course and 2,516 for the half. Each race finished at Santa Barbara City College after beginning in different locations in Goleta. The 26.2-mile course started at Dos Pueblos High School while the the 13.1-mile version began at the Page Youth Center.

Every runner was handed an American Flag for the final stretch of the course called the Veterans Mile.

The runners aren’t the only ones getting a workout. A marathon is a serious spectator sport.

Part of the Veterans Day celebrations included a flyover by vintage fighter planes.
