Once the first-round jitters subsided, the top-seeded Carpinteria girls tennis team dominated play and beat Sierra Vista 17-1 in a CIF Division 5 girls tennis playoff match on Wednesday.
“I think we had a few jitters as the first round took a bit longer than I thought and we were down early in a few of the sets,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “I was pleased with how they quickly righted the ship and started to play good, solid tennis.”
Carpinteria improves to 19-2.
Natalie Saito/Allison Wagner went 1-0 and then Saito paired with Lesly Zapata to win their
next two sets with all three of those sets being 6-0. Makenna Pike/Emily Saito went 2-0 together. Pike then teamed up with Jackie Wilson to go 1-0. Merissa Souza/Gabi Montes De Oca went 2-1 with their only setback being a tiebreak loss to the No. 1 team.
In singles, Kelsie Bryant and Kassandra Ni swept their three sets without dropping any games. Odessa Stork dropped just three games on the day.
“It was a good start for us and hopefully we can sustain it into our next match,” said Bryant.
Carpinteria travels to Vista Del Lag in the Moreno Valley on Friday.
