Freshman Fanny Johansson fired a 2-over 74 on Sunday as SBCC notched its seventh straight WSC women’s golf victory in the first round of the WSC Championships at Alisal River GC in Solvang.
Saralisa Ortega, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, was second at 75. Johansson earned medalist honors for the third time this year and overtook teammate Vanesa Villa for the lowest stroke average in conference play.
“Saralisa is the fourth player to shoot in the mid-70s for us, which is great,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “We were a little up and down today and our players are capable of much more.”
The Vaqueros (57-3) totaled 317 to beat Canyons by 17 shots. SBCC is 28-0 in WSC play and clinched the title over the second-place Cougars (21-7).
The Vaqueros will advance to the Southern Cal Regional (also at Alisal Ranch on Nov. 10-11) along with the next-best scoring team from the 36-hole WSC Championships and the top 12 individuals.
The final round of the WSC Championships and WSC No. 8 will be played Monday at Alisal Ranch, starting at 8:30 a.m.
