Dos Pueblos’ Cole Smith was right in the thick of things at Saturday’s CIF State Cross Country Championships in Fresno, as the Dos Pueblos senior recorded a 5th-place result in the Division-2 race.
Smith’s time of 15 minutes and 23 seconds was just three seconds from a runner-up finish. Villa Park’s Garrett Corcoran won the State individual title in 15:09. Orange Glen’s Andrew Tellames was second in 15:20.
Smith helped lead the Chargers to a third-place team finish, one better than last year. Dos Pueblos was behind champion Saugus and Westlake. Smith overcame several competitors in the final stretch to improve on his 6th-place finish at last week’s Southern Section Finals.
Andrew McGuan, coming in 31st, was the next-best Charger with a time of 15:53. Chris Wasjutin, John Greening and Ian Wasjutin rounded out Dos Pueblos’ top five.
