Cuesta overcame a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat SBCC 70-64 on Saturday in the consolation semifinals of the Cuesta Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Freshman guard Alonso McCain scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting for the Vaqueros (0-2). Kenneth Edwards added 11 points and hit 3-4 from 3-point country. The Vaqueros were called for 30 fouls and the Cougars hit 25-37 from the charity stripe compared to 12-15 for SBCC.
Stephen Harper had six rebounds and Prince Arceneaux six points and five rebounds for Santa Barbara, which snapped a 31-all tie with a 24-10 run to open the second half. The Vaqueros led 55-41 with 7:46 to play but the Cougars took the lead for good with a 15-0 burst.
“We had about six empty trips during their run and our shot selection was a little poor,” said SBCC coach Morris Hodges.
Santa Barbara travels to Glendale on Thursday for a 5 p.m. game.
