San Marcos showed it can win with toughness, too.
The Royals got 20 points from Elijah Johnson, Bryce Ridenour filled in at point guard and scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had five assists, leading to a 73-62 win over perennial L.A. City Section power Crenshaw in the championship game of the Alhambra Tournament.
Sophomore Tyson Miller played a key role in the win. The 6-2 forward battled with Crenshaw’s 6-7 front line and pulled down nine rebounds. he also had three assists and played tough defense.
?This was easily the most physical high school game I can remember,” San Marcos coach Dave Odell said. “We were outsized at most positions and our toughness was a huge part of this win.”
Ridenour was forced to play point guard because Christian Widmer was sideline with symptoms of a concussion. The move didn’t effect his production on the court.
Ridenour was chosen the tournament MVP and Miller was named to the all-tournament team.
“I thought Bryce Ridenour was the best player on the court tonight, which says a lot considering that Crenshaw has 2 or 3 legit Division 1 prospects,” Odell said. “He was the obvious choice for MVP.”
Wesley Ghan-Gibson added 11 points for San Marcos, which led by as many as 18 points in the third quarter. Crenshaw made a run and got as close as five points, but the Royals were able to hold off the Cougars for a big early-season victory.
?Elijah Johnson came through in a big way,” Odell said. “With Bryce forced into point guard duties, Elijah became our primary scorer. Marcus Alvarado played heavy minutes in Christian Widmer?s absence and he was solid. He played great defense.”
