Shirley Benitez scored her first collegiate goal in the sixth minute on Tuesday and SBCC wore down Oxnard in the second half to win its WSC North women?s soccer debut, 4-0, at La Playa Stadium.
?The ball bounced to me, I kicked it and it went through the goalie?s hands,? said Benitez, a freshman midfielder from Carpinteria High. ?We got more connections in the second half and we played more as a team.?
The Vaqueros (4-3, 1-0) outshot the Condors 20-10, including 10-3 in shots on goal.
Brynne Guzman came off the bench and made it 2-0 in the 60th minute on a cross from Heather Rivera. Brandie Harris took a through ball from Lauren Dickson, had her shot blocked and scored on the rebound for her ninth goal in the 73rd minute.
Dickson, a freshman transfer from the University of Arizona, took a pass from Jackie Holmer and beat the keeper for the final score in the 87th minute.
?We had to bounce back from a heavy defeat last week (a 4-0 loss at Canyons),? said coach John Sisterson. ?We knocked it around at times quite well. Some of the freshmen did very well today. And Brianna (Robinson) made a good save to keep a clean sheet in the last minute.
?It was important to get three points in our first conference game.?
