NORTHRIDGE – UCSB’s Allie Ariniello came into her senior season without a goal in her career. She scored three times in the Gauchos first three matches and then was held scoreless for several encounters.
Ariniello scored the only goal in UCSB’s 1-0 win over Cal State Northridge on Sunday afternoon. It was her fourth score of the season, and of her career, and it gave Beth Ritter her sixth shutout. The Gauchos are now 8-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the Big West.
The game’s only goal came in the 14th minute on a hectic sequence. UCSB’s Angelisa Cortez forced a CSUN turnover and broke in on goal. Her shot was saved by an on-rushing Cynthia Tafoya, but the carrom found the foot of Ariniello. She then took a touch and put the ball into an open net.
Both teams had five corner kicks and UCSB had 10 fouls to six for CSUN. Sophomore Lyndsey Preston saw the yellow card in the 90th minute of action.
The Gauchos will return home to host UC Riverside on Friday, Oct. 18 to host UC Riverside in a 7:00 pm m
