Ian Roberts took third on a warm, windy Friday and the SBCC men also placed third in the WSC Preview cross country meet at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.
Roberts, a sophomore from Ventura High, covered the 4-mile course in 22:35. Teammate Alex Heuchert was 14th in 23:30 and Martin Montes was 23rd in 23:48 and Brian Santiago took 24th. Rodrigo Ornelas of Canyons won in 22:12.
Glendale was the team champion with 24 points, followed by Canyons (47), SBCC (100) and Cuesta (104).
“We ran a smart race on a challenging, hilly course,” said Vaquero coach Scott Fickerson. “We moved up well throughout the race and having Ian up front was great.”
In the women’s 5K race, the Vaqueros took eighth, led by Katie Huntington’s 12th-place effort in 23:19. Alexa Sanchez was 25th in 23:19. Moorpark’s Rachel Naumann was the individual champ in 20:30 and Glendale took the team title with 58 points.
“We were running without Nicole (Bartlett) and that hurt a little,” said Fickerson. “Like the men, we ran a smart race. This put us in good position to place in the top half of the WSC and earn a Regional berth.”
The Vaqueros will host the SBCC Invitational on Friday, Oct. 11 at Shoreline Park and Leadbetter Beach. The women’s race starts at 3 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m.
