SBCC scored three goals in a 17-minute stretch of the first half on Tuesday and went on to beat Santa Monica 3-1 in a WSC men’s soccer match at La Playa Stadium.
Santa Barbara improved to 5-4 overall and 5-2 in conference. The Corsairs fell to 4-3-3 and 3-2-1.
The Vaquero goals were scored by a trio of sophomores from England.
Ellis Mavers converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute after Dylan Murphy was tripped in the box. Jamie Sporcic got his team-leading fifth goal in the 28th minute by stealing a pass near midfield, dribbling to the goal and beating the keeper 1-on-1.
Adam Colton made it 3-0 in the 37th minute with a solid half-volley on a high lob pass from Daniel Loveday.
“The mentality was different from last Friday (when the Vaquero dropped a 2-1 home match to Citrus),” said Colton, after scoring his first goal. “Today was about getting the right mindset, the right attitude and applying ourselves in the right way.
“That was a good buildup on my goal. I saw the keeper start to edge out, so I thought I’d hit it on the full and hope it goes in. Jamie Sporcic was our biggest asset in the first half.”
SBCC outshot the Corsairs 14-12 and dominated in shots on goal, 12-4.
“The boys were moving forward and our movement was good ,” said coach John Sisterson. “Adam’s goal was tremendous. It was a good set-up and he picked his spot.”
