Former Santa Barbara High star Ivette Gil has made the University of San Diego women’s basketball team as a freshman walk-on.
Gil, who led the Dons to the CIF-Southern Section quarterfinals and the second round of the CIF State Tournament as a senior last season, impressed USD coach Cindy Fisher and was given a spot on the team.
Ivette is the second member of her family to play Division 1 women’s basketball. Her cousin, Araceli Gil, played for Richmond University in Virginia.
Ivette will be facing a couple of familiar faces when USD begins play in the West Coast Conference. Tess Emerson, a former teammate at Santa Barbara, plays at Pepperdine and former club teammate Keani Albanez plays at Gonzaga.
