Freshman Alex Pitchford’s 48 proved to be the difference for San Marcos in a 257-272 Channel League girls golf win over Santa Barbara High at La Cumbre Country Club on Tuesday.
A freshman shooting the second leading score was huge,” San Marcos coach Sarah Ashton said. “She was also our last player in and we were tied waiting for her scorecard to arrive. I am extremely proud of her focus and shot choices; she showed great resilience on the course today.”
Melissa Jewkes of the Royals and Santa Barbara’s Eleonora DiCarlo shared medalist honors with 45s. Isabella Doub shot a 46 for the Dons.
“We are very pleased with a win on a challenging course during an important competition against a rival,” Ashton said. “However, we uncovered some areas that we need to work on before our next match.
She added: “These girls are strong competitors and their determination not to quit is an important factor in why they won today.”
San Marcos is now 8-1 overall and 3-1 in league.
