Kayta Goyich tallied 11 kills and recorded a .524 attack percentage as No. 9 Westmont Women’s Volleyball started Golden State Athletic Conference play with a three-set sweep of Arizona Christian (25-6, 25-21, 25-8).
The Warriors improved to 13-1 on the season and 1-0 in GSAC play. Arizona Christian dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-1 in the GSAC.
Madison Serrano served for nine-straight points to start the first set. Goyich recorded seven of her kills in the opening frame.
The second set was an entirely different story as the Firestorm jumped out to an 8-3 lead. The Warriors battled back, however, to tie the match at 15 on another of Goyich’s kills. However, after another Warrior point, Arizona Christian reeled off three in a row to take a 19-16 advantage.
A block by Westmont’s Alexandria Wilson and Heidi Thompson made the score 19-17 before two Warrior attack errors put the Firestorm up 21-17. Those would prove to be the last of Arizona Christian’s points as the Warriors closed out the set on am 8-0 run.
The third set was much like the first with the Warriors building a 13-3 lead and cruising to a 25-8 victory to claim the match.
Serrano had eight kills for the Warriors and 11 digs while Thompson and Striff each had six kills. Thompson also contributed 27 assists. Ciena Colburn and Ciara Turner notched five kills each.
On Tuesday evening, the Warriors will take on top-ranked Concordia (9-0, 1-0 GSAC) in Irvine.
