No. 7 SBCC swept No. 5 San Diego Mesa for the second time this season on Saturday, then ran into unbeaten Golden West in the championship of the fourth annual L.A. Pierce Invitational women’s volleyball tournament at Woodland Hills.
The Vaqueros (6-5) beat No. 3 Golden West (6-0) in the first set of the final before dropping a 3-1 decision (16-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-20). The Rustlers topped SBCC for the second time in eight days to claim the title of the eight-team tourney.
Madison Waddell led the Vaqueros with 15 kills in the title match and Jenna Anderson had nine. Eryn Young contributed 11 digs.
Earlier in the day, SBCC swept Mesa 25-16, 26-24, 25-18 behind 17 kills and 11 digs by Anderson. Jasmine Ward had 10 kills. “We came out with a lot of fire and energy,” said assistant coach Lisa Gera. “Beating Mesa for a second time was huge.”
Santa Barbara is playing the toughest nonconference schedule in the state with seven of its 11 matches against teams ranked in the state top 10.
The Vaqueros will host No. 11 Bakersfield on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
