A goal by Amanda Diesen off a corner kick and another by K.J. Hornibrook on a breakaway gave ninth-ranked Westmont a 2-0 women’s soccer victory over Southern Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Thorrington Field.
“Another week of work put to good use,” said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely after the game. “We knew that Southern Oregon would be tough coming in, especially after they took The Master’s to overtime on Thursday.”
Diesen’s goal came in the 20th minute. Courtney Stonesifer took a corner kick and placed the ball in front of the Raiders’ goal. Diesen fended off a Southern Oregon defender to kick the ball into the back of the net.
In the 30th minute, three minutes after subbing into the game, Hornibrook stole the ball away from a Raider defensive player. She then broke for the goal, beating goalkeeper Kylie Moltzen to score her second goal of the season.
The Warriors’ defensive efforts played a significant role in the game. The Raiders took only one shot and did not have a shot on goal.
“We were able to keep them out of their attacking third,” said Kiely. “We did well to get in (toward the goal). I wish we could have finished a couple of more just for the sake of efficiency in our finishing, but I was very pleased with the team’s effort.
“Tiffany (Dimaculangan) continues to dominate,” added the coach. “It doesn’t matter what the opponent does with her or who they stick on her, she is able to penetrate. The combination of Tiffany, Jenny (Martinez) and Sophia (Smati) was fantastic. Jenny executed one of her best games today. She was strong up top – laying the ball off and enabling us to do what we have worked all week on being able to do.”
The Warriors (5-0-1) have just one more non-conference game, which they will play on the road on Friday against Marymount (2-2). The game will be placed at the StubHub Center in Carson.
