Stacy Atwater scored a pair of second-half goals on a warm Tuesday afternoon, leading College of the Canyons to a 4-0 women?s soccer shutout over SBCC in a nonconference game.
It was a rare home loss for the Vaqueros (3-3), who are 19-5-4 in their last 28 at La Playa Stadium. The Cougars improved to 4-1-2.
Leilani Konrad got a rebound goal in the 22nd minute and Kelsey Sherry converted a 26-yard shot after a giveaway by an SBCC defender with 30 seconds to go in the first half.
Atwater made it 3-0 in the 51st minute with a point-blank header after a nice cross from Konrad. Atwater scored again in the 68th minute after taking a long pass from Annika Wilson.
?We didn?t train well at all yesterday and this game reflected that,? said coach John Sisterson. ?I told them we have to do better, otherwise we could be on the end of a beating. My worst fears came true.
?The first few minutes, we were moving the ball around and then we just fell apart. We were chasing the game and they did to us exactly what we were expecting to do to them.?
Canyons outshot the home team 24-10 overall and 11-3 in shots on goal.
?We just didn?t compete today,? Sisterson added. ?You have to be prepared to go out and battle. We have a saying here within the soccer teams: ?Hard work beats talent if talent doesn?t work hard.? And we just didn?t work hard enough today.?
The Vaqueros open WSC North action on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. home game against Oxnard.
