There’s a big high school football game scheduled for SBCC’s La Playa Stadium on Thursday night.
But neither school playing in the game will be from Santa Barbara.
Unable to find an available stadium in west Ventura County, St. Bonaventure High is playing its Marmonte League opener against Westlake at La Playa Stadium.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
This is a marquee matchup between two of Southern California’s premier prep football programs, so a large-capacity venue was needed to accommodate an expected big crowd. La Playa can seat 10,000.
“Larrabee Stadium (at Ventura High) is unavailable this Friday,” St. Bonaventure principal Marc Groff told Presidio Sports in an email. “Moorpark College is the next largest stadium in the county, but (it) is seen as a ‘home game’ for Westlake.”
That left Groff with “no other choice,” he said.
St. Bonaventure and Westlake both went 3-2 in their pre-league games.
The league they play in is part of the Pac-5 Division in the CIF Southern Section, considered the top division for high school football in the Southland.
