SBCC opened its women’s volleyball season by going 1-1 at the Bakersfield Quad on Saturday.
The Vaqueros lost a five-set match against Grossmont before coming back to sweep San Diego Mesa.
Jenna Anderson had 20 kills and Madison Waddell added 14 in a 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 23-21 loss to Grossmont.
In the second match, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 win, freshman defensive specialist Jane Petricka delivered eight aces, along with good defense and passing. Anderson added 12 kills and Kristy Kearney had seven kills and two blocks.
“Both our setters (Ari Gardner and Madi Leiphardt, a freshman from Dos Pueblos High) played well,” said coach Ed Gover. “I was happy with our freshmen, our setters … everyone played well. We’re three-deep at every position this year, which is a nice luxury.”
