After Weeks 0, 1 and 2, it’s time to sort things out and see who are the top five high school football teams in the area.
Bishop Diego made it perfectly clear last Friday night that it belongs at the top of the Presidio Sports Football Fab 5. Playing La Salle, a top-10 team in their CIF Northwest Division, the top-ranked Cardinals put on impressive performance, rolling to a 29-3 halftime lead and winning 43-16. The 3-0 Cardinals have outscored their three opponents 140-16.
No. 2 Lompoc played out of the Southern Section two weeks ago and lost to Bakersfield-Frontier, a Central Section Division 1 power. The Braves returned to their winning ways last Friday by blanking Pioneer Valley. And they got speedy running back Austin Hayes back from injury.
Third-ranked Carpinteria returned home after a pair of road wins and won a shootout with Nipomo, 45-31. The Warriors showed their explosiveness, scoring four TDs in the first quarter.
St. Joseph is off to a 2-0 start thanks to the play of 6-3 quarterback Curry Parham and the running Mateo Becerra.
Coming in at No. 5 is San Marcos. After going 1-9 last year, the Royals are rolling behind a stronger line and good skill-position players like QB Wesley Ghan-Gibson, running back Esteban Alfaro and receiver Austin “Coop” Pugh.
