BERKELEY – The No. 6 UCSB men’s water polo (6-1) split its two games on Saturday at the NorCal Invitational. The Gauchos defeated No. 11 UC San Diego, 16-7, before suffering a loss to No. 2 UCLA, 10-4.
Against UC San Diego, UCSB kept the Tritons scoreless until half, ending the second quarter up 10-0. The Gauchos never looked back, and ultimately cruised to a 16-7 win over the Tritons with an impressive six goals from senior Matt Gronow.
Junior Derek Shoemaker led the Gauchos with two goals against UCLA. Sophomore Chris Whitelegge was able to tally 14 saves to help UCSB on the defensive end. Two more Gauchos netted a goal each, but it wasn’t enough as the Bruins secured the victory.
UCSB (6-1) will play Long Beach State tomorrow at the NorCal Invitational at 9:25 a.m.
