Dos Pueblos came to play when it ventured north to take on perennial power Lompoc.
The Chargers hung with the No. 3 team in the CIF Western Division before the Braves pulled away with their punishing running game and scored a 44-21 win at Huyck Stadium.
After falling behind 17-0 at halftime, Dos Pueblos came out in the second half and put together a good drive. Quarterback Barrett Burnes capped the drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Matt Sessler to put the Chargers on the board at 17-7.
Lompoc (3-1) responded with a long drive of its own and A.J. Florez finished it with a 1-yard run.
But Burnes kept the Chargers (1-3) in the game, directing another scoring drive and finding Conner Kanen for a 23-yard touchdown toss to make a 24-14 game late in the third quarter.
The Braves pulled away, getting a 21-yard run from Florez and a 30 yarder from Derrick Portis.
Burnes hit Angel Davison for a 47-yard touchdown before Portis scored again for Lompoc on a 26-yard run.
Portis led Lompoc’s potent running attack with 172 yards on 17 carries. Florez was right behind him with 163 on 22 rushes and Austin Hayes ran 95 yards on 10 carries.
“Overall, l think we won this game in the trenches,” Lompoc coach Andrew Jones told the Lompoc Record.
The Braves rushed for over 400 yards.
Dos Pueblos got a good game from Burnes. He completed 13 of 23 passes for 195 yards and no interceptions.
