Second-ranked Cate got 14 kills from Cydney Pierce and defeated Carpinteria in three sets in a crosstown girls volleyball match on Wednesday. The set scores were 25-20, 25-10, 25-16.
Peyton Shelburne added nine kills for the Rams (2-0), who are second in the CIF-SS 4-A Division poll.
“We started out a little slow in the first game and then we steadied out and tried to play smoothly,” Cate coach Greg Novak said. “We were able to move the ball around. Carpinteria is a great defensive team. They dug a lot of balls then we would make errors. We were finally able to find the floor.”
