GTen: Dons split four matches at California Classic

Santa Barbara High went 2-2 and finished in seventh place in Division 1 at the California High School Classic girls tennis tournament in Fresno over the weekend.

The Dons defeated Tamalpais of Mill Valley 7-2 and lost their next two matches by 4-3 scores against Monta Vista (Cupertino) and Archbishop Mitty (San Jose). They beat Saratoga, 4-3, in their final match.

The Dons were led by Hailey deBoer and Kelli Martindale, who each went 4-0 in their matches. Other notable performances were Madison Hale going 3-1, including two impressive victories at No. 1 singles, Megan Grant and Karina Thornton each went 3-1 and Maddie Cuttler finished 2-1 for the tournament.

“I was extremely pleased with the overall outcome,” coach Greg Tebbe said. “All of our players competed well and played lots of quality tennis, which will help prepare us for the start of our dual match season.”

Santa Barbara opens the regular season with two home matches this week on Tuesday and Wednesday.
