It was a grind-out of golf match on Tuesday when crosstown rivals San Marcos and Dos Pueblos met Tuesday at Glen Annie Golf Club.
Dos Pueblos shot its highest score of the season but managed to win the match, 231-244, to remain undefeated on the season. The Chargers are 8-0, 3-0 in Channel League
It was the first loss of the season for San Marcos (6-1, 1-1).
“Today we really felt like we dodged a bullet,” Dos Pueblos coach Dan Choi said. “I am not sure if it was the heat or what, but as a team we turned in one of our worst shooting performances in a while. We could tell from the get-go as our energy seemed low and we had a hard time getting focused. We knew that San Marcos had reconed the course last Friday and that they meant business. They have really been playing great and we knew that this was not a match we could take lightly. As it turns out we were exactly right.”
Melissa Jewkes of San Marcos shot a 39 to earn medalist honors, but DP had four players shoot in the 40s to stave off the Royals.
“Obviously, we are disappointed that we didn’t win, but we gave it a good look and know what we need to improve on,” San Marcos coach Sarah Ashton said. “I’m proud of the way the girls carried themselves in a competitive match. We improved 31 strokes from last year’s match vs. DP at Glen Annie and we had fun out there, which is important too.”
Ashton noted that Jewkes said it was fourth match this season where she medaled or earned a share of the honors.
“Melissa Jewkes did a great job managing the course and earned the well-deserved medalist spot,” Choi said. “Glen Annie can be a tough course and therefore it is not often that we give up the medalist spot to an opponent at home.”
Ashton praised Emily Peterson, who shot a 49 and had a birdie on the last hole.
Mika Henrickson shot a 42 and Jamie Sharpe fired a 44 to lead Dos Pueblos.
“From the first hole, our whole team was struggling,” Choi said. “It was one of those days in which they just felt uncomfortable over the ball. By the end of the round, some of the girls were hitting clubs they never would have normally hit just to keep the ball in play. Given the circumstances I was proud of the way they all did grind it out. Each player knew they weren’t playing well and had the potential to turn in really high numbers but figured out a way to manage the damage.”
