Dos Pueblos struggled to finish drives and suffered its second loss of the young football season.
In their home opener, the Chargers were shut out by San Luis Obispo, 17-0, on Saturday at Scott O’Leary Stadium.
“We got opportunities that we have to take advantage of, and we’re not doing that,” said Dos Pueblos coach Nate Mendoza. “All we can do is move on to Monday and prepare for Cabrillo.”
The Chargers were driving late in the first quarter when a tipped pass resulted in a 70 yard interception return for a touchdown by SLO’s junior defensive back Nate Greenelsh.
That play gave the Tigers momentum.
In the second quarter, the Tigers finished a short drive with a 5-yard rushing touchdown by senior running back Sawyer Scott to take a 14-0 lead.
The Chargers thought they were leaving the field for halftime down by two touchdowns. But the officials called the team back due to a clock issue. That gave San Luis Obispo the opportunity to attempt a field goal. The Tigers converted from 29-yards as the buzzer sounded and took a 17-0 lead into the locker room.
The Chargers put together an impressive 75-yard drive late in the third quarter. The drive was highlighted by a pair of inspiring runs (10 and 15 yards, respectively) by junior running back Angel Davison. But they came away with no points as a 33-yard field-goal attempt was tipped.
Dos Pueblos captain Tyler Welch said scoring would turn things around for the Chargers.
“The only way to put pressure on (SLO) was to score,” Welch said. “We just couldn’t get our offense going. It was just too little too late.”
At halftime, Dos Pueblos recognized 18 athletes who earned all-league, all-CIF, and all-state honors last spring.
