San Marcos placed fifth at the Riverside Invitational boys water polo tournament over the weekend
The Royals lone loss came against Palm Desert, 14-12. They defeated M.L. King 19-4, Redlands 18-4, Chaparral 16-5 and Riverside Poly 17-4.
“Our expectations were to win the tournament and were disappointed with the 5th place finish and the loss to Palm Desert,” San Marcos coach Jeff Ashton said. “It just seemed that we couldn’t get anything going offensively or defensively and didn’t play near what we are capable. It did give us the opportunity to re-establish our goals for the season and discuss what we need to do to achieve those goals.”
Ashton singled out the play of George Kuesis. “He played great all weekend and never gets enough credit,” said the coach. “He’s an absolute workhorse. In the Palm Desert game, we were down 11-8 and George pretty much single handedly brought us back to an 11-11 tie and gave us a chance to win that game.”
The Royals (7-1) play at Righetti on Thursday.
