Omar Ibarra, an 11-year-old boy battling cancer, will be the honorary captain for the Bishop Diego football team in the Cardinals’ game against La Salle on Friday at La Playa Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
The event was set up by Bishop Diego and the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization providing financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer in the tri-counties.
In a pregame ceremony, the Cardinals will present Ibarra with a jersey and a signed football
Ibarra has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and he will go through a total of 3 1/2 years of chemotherapy.
Bishop Diego has partnered with the Teddy Bear Foundation to provide support for families. At home games, fans are asked to bring items requested by the organization. This week’s request is diapers (size 4 and 5), children’s DVD movies, school supplies, Legos (small boxes).
There will be boxes at the upper and lower stadium entrances, where fans can drop off items.
