San Marcos High School’s Jewel Fisher is the Santa Barbara Running Female High School Runner of the Month.
Fisher is entering her fourth year on the varsity cross country team for the Royals and is primed to lead by example. She’s the only four-year letter winner on the girls team and turned in the Royals’ fastest time at CIF Prelims last November as a junior.
“I’ve looked up to the seniors the last four years and so now I’m kind of taking their reigns and teaching the underclassmen,” Fisher said during a break from team training camp this week.
“All the girls look up to Jewel because she’s been a four-year starter and she always does the right thing at the right time,” said Royals coach Tracy Jenkins.
The San Marcos program has 132 students trying out this fall. Being a part of a team is a big reason why Fisher has enjoyed cross country season so much while in high school.
“I like just being active and I like all the people involved with running,” she said.
Fisher has been committed to the team cause all summer long leading up to her senior year, even traveling to Nebraska with current teammate Julianna Logan and three former teammates for a week spent doing ranch work and running. The five Royals even won a local 5k race, crossing the finish line hand-in-hand.
Back in Santa Barbara, Fisher is running 50-60 miles a week to prepare for the season that starts on September 11 in Lompoc.
“I’m just going to try to enjoy my last year as a high school runner and make the best of it, and keep working hard,” said Fisher.
