Harris’ hat trick powers SBCC women to 7-0 rout

Sophomore Brandie Harris scored in the sixth minute on Tuesday and went on to record a hat trick for the SBCC women’s soccer team in a 7-0 season-opening rout at L.A. Harbor.

Chiara Kehl scored from 25 yards out to make it 2-0 in the 15th minute and Heather Rivera added a penalty kick in the 27th. Lauren Dickson, who scored 79 points two years ago at Quartz Hill High, headed in a pass from Kehl to make it 4-0 at the half.

Harris scored on a long run in the 60th minute and Maddie Shaw, who assisted on the first goal, made it 6-0 on a 35-yard blast in the 77th minute. Harris, a former Dos Pueblos High standout, completed her second college hat trick with two minutes to play.

“It was a very warm day and a great way to start the season,” said coach John Sisterson, who is 7-0 in season openers with the women. “Our defense was solid and the strikers took their chances.”

L.A. HARBOR MEN 4, SBCC 2
Kieron Coleman started the men’s soccer season with a bang by scoring in the first minute for SBCC on Tuesday but the Vaqueros couldn’t stop L.A. Harbor in a 4-2 setback in Wilmington.

After the Seahawks took a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute, Daniel Loveday tied it up four minutes later after a strong buildup. The game turned in the 70th minute when the Vaqueros couldn’t convert on a breakaway and Harbor took a 3-2 lead on a counter-attack.

In the 82nd minute, SBCC freshman Liron Cohen had a good opportunity in the box but the Harbor goalie made a solid save. Thirty seconds later, Harbor found the net for an insurance goal.

“It was very disappointing because this was a game we felt we should have won,” said coach John Sisterson. “We need to regroup and get ready for Taft.”

The Vaqueros make their home debut on Tuesday, Sept. 3 against Taft at 7 p.m. in La Playa Stadium.
