UCSB’s Anthony Ortolan ran a 24:21.90 to win the 8K Lagoon Open on Saturday, but the Gauchos were nipped in their annual dual meet with Cal Poly, 26-29.
Ortolan’s time was nearly four seconds better than the second-place finisher Chris Frias of Cal Poly, who ran a 24:25.70.
“We ran well as a team today,” said head coach Pete Dolan. “This was a good opening race for us and I was happy with our runs.”
Cal Poly’s Sean Davidson finished third while UCSB’s Andrew Farkas was fourth. Farkas recorded a time of 25:12.60. Bryce Rausa and Tyler Brady were also top-10 finishers for the Gauchos. Rausa was seventh in a time of 25:35.90 while Brady was ninth at 25:42.
WOMEN’S RACE
The Gauchos were edged in their annual dual meet with Cal Poly, 27-28. The meet was run on UCSB’s 5K Lagoon Course.
Gauchos Dani Moreno and Christine Cooperstein finished second and third with times of 17:25.50 and 17:36.80 respectively. The race was won by the Mustangs’ Laura Hollander in a time of 16:36.00. Hollander set a course record in the 2012 race lagoon race.
Three other UCSB runners finished among the top-10. Maxine Goyette was fifth in a time of 18:03.20, Jessica Chadwick was eighth at 18:18.40 and Bailey Miller clocked an 18:46.30 to finish 10th.
Cal Poly’s Rachel Bush was fourth in 18:00.70. Mustang runners also finished sixth, seventh and ninth.
