Delia Bullock has been named a Santa Barbara Running High School Runner of the Month for her work organizing the annual Lakes of Love running race that raises money for child cancer research.
Bullock, along with event c0-founders Bela Lafferty and Camille Wyss, has raised nearly $10,000 for the cause in four years of organizing the grassroots event.
When Lafferty’s older sister was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphona, the three friends felt compelled to act.
“(We wanted) to show our support for her sister, their family, and everyone else in the community whose battling cancer,” Bullock explained. “And also just raise money for the cause in any way that we can.”
Lafferty’s sister has gotten better but the effort continues.
“After the first year of doing that, it was just such a great experience and it was so rewarding that we kind of knew we wanted to make it a tradition,” Bullock said.
The race – a 4-mile run/walk – happens in late May around Lake Los Carneros in Goleta. The benefitting organization is?Cure Search for Childhood Cancer.
Almost all of the work gets done by the three co-Presidents and a student club with 15 members.
“A lot of them have been there since the beginning,” Bullock said.
Bullock is a dedicated student-athlete at Dos Pueblos who also plays water polo and is a member of the DP Engineering Club. The Cal Poly Computer Science Department and the National Center for Women & Information Technology recognized Bullock earlier this year with a regional Aspirations in Computing Award. Away from school, Bullock is an avid outdoorsman and experienced backpacker.
