Lance Kronberg has been named head coach of the SBCC women?s tennis team. He replaces Ken Thomas, who resigned after one season to focus on other commitments.
Kronberg coached this year?s Vaquero men?s team to second place in the WSC and its first playoff appearance in 12 seasons.
?I?m honored and excited for this opportunity,? said Kronberg. ?First and foremost, we?re seeking academic success and trying to recruit as many local kids as we can. We want them to get their AA degree and transfer to four-year universities.
?We?re the No. 1 Community College in the country academically and I think athletics should also reflect that.?
Bruna Magalhaes, a freshman on the 2013 SBCC women?s tennis squad, captured the first state singles title in school history at the Ojai Tournament in April. The Vaquero women went 5-5 on the season and finished third in the Western State Conference.
Kronberg previously coached the Vaquero men in 2001-02, leading them to a WSC title in 2001 and earning Coach of the Year honors.
“Lance does a tremendous job in providing a highly organized, competitive and disciplined culture for our student-athletes,? said athletic director Ryan Byrne. ?With Lance at the helm, our women’s tennis team will be a part of a challenging and rewarding program that will prepare them for success at SBCC and beyond.”
Kronberg was a talented player, winning a CIF title at Santa Barbara High in 1985 and a State title with SBCC in 1989. He was the CIF runner-up in doubles and went on to earn All-American honors at SBCC and UC Santa Cruz. He got his Bachelor?s degree from UC Santa Cruz after helping the Banana Slugs to second place in the NCAA Div. 3 Championships.
He?s been on the staff of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club for 16 years, serving as head professional from 1997-2002 and 2006 to the present.
Kronberg and his wife of 15 years, Alison, have two daughters — Anna (8) and Lucy (4).
