Anika Wilson, a standout player for the San Marcos High girls volleyball team, combined with Bay Area prep star Kirsten Mead to win the California Beach Volleyball Association Santa Barbara Women?s AA Tournament at East Beach last Saturday.
Wilson-Mead defeated Mande Raiher and Jacqueline Muhich of Santa Monica in the final and earned their AAA ratings. Wilson, a sophomore, helped San Marcos win the Channel League title and advance to the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs. Mead, a junior, was the setter for CIF Central Coast Section champion Valley Christian of San Jose.
The third-place finishers were Allie Wheeler of Saratoga and Jenna Belton of Aptos, and Paula Davey of Dana Point and Elizabeth Smith of Aptos.
In the Men?s B Tournament held the same day, Italian compatriots and Santa Barbara residents Luca Foschini and Alessio Signorini defeated Joe Erikat and Keilan Meertens of San Luis Obispo in the final.
The local team of Brant ?B? Lee and Geoffrey Berz shared third place with John Shi of Ventura and Brendan McCay of Santa Barbara.
These were the first tournaments of the season at East Beach. The next events are a Men?s and Women?s ?A? on June 8.
