Dos Pueblos junior and defending state shot put champion Stamatia Scarvelis improved on her national-best mark and placed second in discus qualifying on Friday at the CIF State Track and Field Championships in Clovis.
Scarvelis threw the shot 51-11 on her last throw of the prelims, surpassing her previous best of 51-9.25, which she set at last week’s CIF-SS Masters Meet. Her other two throws of 49-0 and 48-10.50 were better than everyone else in the qualifying field. Tanya Sapa of La Sierra was second at 47-10 and Nia Britt of Alemany was third at 46-9.
Scarvelis threw the discus 153-0 to finish behind state leader Nikki Okwelogu of Clovis, who threw 170-06, the third best mark in the nation.
Bryan Fernandez of DP didn’t advance in the boys 1600, finishing eighth in his preliminary heat and 19th overall. Running in the same heat with state leader Blake Haney of Stockdale, Fernandez finished in 4:17.77. Haney won the heat in 4:13.05. The cutoff for Saturday’s final was 4:15.19.
