TRK: Scarvelis at her best at Masters; Fernandez returns to State Meet

Stamatia Scarvelis saved her best for the postseason.

The defending state shot put champion from Dos Pueblos will be making a return trip to the CIF State Meet after throwing the best mark in the nation to win Friday’s CIF Masters Meet at Cerritos College.

Scarvelis threw 51 feet, 9.25 inches to far outdistance second-place Nia Britt of Alemany (47-2.50). The throw surpassed the top national mark of 51-3.50. The junior’s previous state best was 50-4.50, which she threw at the CIF Division 2 Prelims. She had a throw of 50-9.75 in her series Friday.

Scarvelis also qualified for the State Meet in the discus, finishing third with a mark of 146-6. Madison Jacobs of Arroyo Grande won at 152-10 and Destiny Talalemotu of Long Beach Millikan finished second at 147-5.

Also returning to the State Meet is Dos Pueblos senior Bryan Fernandez in the 1600. The University of Oregon-bound Fernandez placed eighth in a tight Masters Meet race in 4:13.59. The difference between first and 10th place was 1.50 seconds.

Niema Poindexter of DP missed qualifying in the girls triple jump. She placed 12th with a mark of 36-5.50. Sydney Eilbacher placed 12th in the pole vault and missed qualifying for state.
