University’s top-seeded boys tennis team defeated Santa Barbara on Wednesday in the CIF Division-1 semifinals with a 15-3 decision.
“I am extremely proud of the way our players competed to the very last point against a University team that is probably better than most college teams,” reported Santa Barbara High head coach Greg Tebbe. “Winning three sets against this team is no easy task and we narrowly lost in three matches so our players can hold their heads up high.”
The Dons have qualified for the State Tournament so their season isn’t finished. The Southern Section’s Individual Tournament is also scheduled to begin next week.
Channel League singles champion Graham Maassen won the Dons’ lone point in singles. The doubles teams of Avery Chernin/Morgan Hale and Jack Damen/Mitchell Kuhn claimed a set each.
University will go for its fourth-straight D1 championship at the Claremont Club on Friday.
The Trojans have a streak going even more impressive than Santa Barbara’s current 114-match win streak in Channel League play. University has won 85 matches in a row against any CIF opponent and will be playing in its eighth-straight CIF Championship match.
